To find out the number of neutrons for palladium(Pd) ,we have to have knowledge about atomic number, atomic mass, mass number of palladium(Pd)
.Click picture to see clearly.
Step-1:
●The atomic number of palladium(Pd) is the number of protons in palladium(Pd) nucleus.
●The atomic mass of palladium(Pd) is the average number of protons plus neutrons of all the isotopes of palladium(Pd) .
●The masss number of palladium(Pd) is the number of protons plus neutrons of a specific isotope of palladium(Pd) .
Step-2:
We need to convert atomic mass of palladium(Pd) to mass number of palladium(Pd) by rounding if necessary (In case of fraction) .
From periodic table,
●Atomic number of palladium(Pd) is 46.
●Atomic mass of palladium(Pd) is 106.4
●To find out mass number,we need to round 106.4 to a whole number.
So,by rounding,we are getting the mass number of palladium(Pd).The mass number of palladium(Pd) is 106.
Step-3:
By the difference between mass number and atomic number of palladium(Pd),we get the number of neutrons in palladium(Pd).
●Number of neutrons=106-46=60
In another way,
●Mass number=Protons +Neutrons
Or,106 =46+Neutrons
Or,106-46=Neutrons
Therefore,
Neutrons=60
Therefore, the number of neutrons in palladium(Pd) is 60 here for this isotope.Remember that neutrons are present in the nucleous of palladium(Pd)and it's charge is zero.
●Number of protons in palladium(Pd) is 46.Protons are present in the nucleus of palladium(Pd) .
● Number of electrons in palladium(Pd) is 46.Remember that number of electron equals to proton in a neutral atom.Eletrons are present outside of nucleus of palladium(Pd) .
