To find out the number of neutrons for Yttrium(Y) ,we have to have knowledge about atomic number, atomic mass, mass number of Yttrium(Y)
.Click picture to see clearly.
Step-1:
●The atomic number of Yttrium(Y) is the number of protons in Yttrium(Y)'s nucleus.
●The atomic mass of Yttrium(Y) is the average number of protons plus neutrons of all the isotopes of Yttrium(Y) .
●The masss number of Yttrium(Y) is the number of protons plus neutrons of a specific isotope of Yttrium(Y) .
Step-2:
We need to convert atomic mass of Yttrium(Y) to mass number of Yttrium(Y) by rounding if necessary (In case of fraction) .
From periodic table,
●Atomic number of Yttrium(Y) is 39.
●Atomic mass of Yttrium(Y) is 88.91
●To find out mass number,we need to round 88.91 to a whole number. So,by rounding,we are getting mass number of Yttrium(Y).The mass number of Yttrium(Y) is 89.
Step-3:
By the difference between mass number and atomic number of Yttrium(Y),we get the number of neutrons in Yttrium(Y).
●Number of neutrons=89-39=50
In another way,
●Mass number=Protons +Neutrons
Or,89 =39+Neutrons
Or,89-39=Neutrons
Therefore,
Neutrons=50
Therefore, the number of neutrons in Yttrium(Y) is 50 here for this isotope.Remember that neutrons are present in the nucleous of Yttrium(Y)and it's charge is zero.
●Number of protons in Yttrium(Y) is 39.Protons are present in the nucleus of Yttrium(Y) .
● Number of electrons in Yttrium(Y) is 39.Remember that number of electron equals to proton in a neutral atom.Eletrons are present outside of nucleus of Yttrium(Y) .
