To find out the number of neutrons for molybdenum(Mo) ,we have to have knowledge about atomic number, atomic mass, mass number of molybdenum(Mo)
.Click picture to see clearly.
Step-1:
●The atomic number of molybdenum(Mo) is the number of protons in molybdenum(Mo)'s nucleus.
●The atomic mass of molybdenum(Mo) is the average number of protons plus neutrons of all the isotopes of molybdenum(Mo) .
●The masss number of molybdenum(Mo) is the number of protons plus neutrons of a specific isotope of molybdenum(Mo) .
Step-2:
We need to convert atomic mass of molybdenum(Mo) to mass number of molybdenum(Mo) by rounding if necessary (In case of fraction) .
From periodic table,
●Atomic number of molybdenum(Mo) is 42.
●Atomic mass of molybdenum(Mo) is 95.94
●To find out mass number,we need to round 95.94 to a whole number.
So,by rounding,we are getting mass number of molybdenum(Mo)
.The mass n umber of molybdenum(Mo) is 96.
Step-3:
By the difference between mass number and atomic number of molybdenum(Mo),we get the number of neutrons in molybdenum(Mo).
●Number of neutrons=96-42=54
In another way,
●Mass number=Protons +Neutrons
Or,96 =42+Neutrons
Or,96-42=Neutrons
Therefore,
Neutrons=54
Therefore, the number of neutrons in molybdenum(Mo) is 54 here for this isotope.Remember that neutrons are present in the nucleous of molybdenum(Mo)and it's charge is zero.
●Number of protons in molybdenum(Mo) is 42.Protons are present in the nucleus of molybdenum(Mo) .
● Number of electrons in molybdenum(Mo) is 42.Remember that number of electron equals to proton in a neutral atom.Eletrons are present outside of nucleus of molybdenum(Mo) .
