                       Step-1:

Magnesium sulfide is composed of Mg2+ cation and S2- sulfide anion.The oxidation number of magnesium is +2 and the oxidation number of sulpur is 2-

Now put these two ions side by side.

Now balance the positive and negative charge.Here the charge of magnesium is +2 and the change of sulfur is 2-.So we have nothing to balance about charge.So the formula for magnesium sulfide is given below:
