【】Oxidation of Ethene or Ethylene (CH2=CH2)

Image
Oxidation of Ethene or Ethylene(CH2=CH2) Solution: Today we will talk about the oxidation of ethene. In ethene, the oxidation number of every carbon is -2. When we apply mild oxidising conditions to ethene,we get ethane-1,2-diol. In mild oxidising conditions, the oxidising agent is kept cold at room temperature. For mild oxidation of ethene,we use alkaline solution of KMnO4 (potassium permanganate). Oxidation of Ethene (CH2=CH2) In the above reaction, ethene has lost electrons,so ethene has oxidized.Look at the change of oxidation number from -2 to -1. When we apply strong oxidizing conditions to ethene using hot and concentrated potassium permanganate solution,we get carbon dioxide and water. The production of CO₂ and H₂O from strong oxidation of ethene is given below. In the above reaction, ethene has lost electrons,so ethene has oxidized.Look at the change of oxidation number from -2 to +4.

Answer: Ammonia, NH3 , has eight valence electrons. Explanation: Today we are going to determine the valence electrons for NH3(Ammonia). Step-1: Nitrogen is the element of group VA.This means that nitrogen has five valence electrons. On the other hand, hydrogen is the element of group IA.This means that hydrogen has one valence electrons. Step-2: For ,NH3 N → 5 3×H → 1×3=3 So, totally we have (8) eight valence electrons in NH3,five from nitrogen and three from three hydrogen atom. NH3 Lewis Structure NH3 Lewis structure Continue

How Many Valence Electrons Does CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) Have? Answer: CO2 has 16 valence electrons ,four from carbon and twelve from two oxygen atom. Explanation: Today we are going to determine the valence electrons for CO2 (Carbon Dioxide).                Step-1: Carbon is the element of group IV A.This means that carbon has four valence electrons. On the other hand, oxygen is the element of group VIA.This means that Oxygen has six valence electrons.                    Step-2: For ,CO2 C    →   4 2×O   →   6×2=12 So, totally we have 16 valence electrons in CO2,four from carbon and twelve from two oxygen atom.
