Description
To find out the number of neutrons for neodymium(Nd),we have to have knowledge about atomic number, atomic mass and mass number of neodymium(Nd).
.Click picture to see clearly.
Step-1:
●The atomic number of neodymium(Nd) is the number of protons in neodymium(Nd)'s nucleus.
●The atomic mass of neodymium(Nd) is the average number of protons plus neutrons of all the isotopes of neodymium(Nd) .
●The masss number of neodymium(Nd) is the number of protons plus neutrons of a specific isotope of neodymium(Nd) .
Step-2:
We need to convert atomic mass of neodymium(Nd) to mass number of neodymium(Nd) by rounding if necessary (In case of fraction) .
From periodic table,
●Atomic number of neodymium(Nd) is 60.
●Atomic mass of neodymium(Nd) is 144.2
●To find out mass number,we need to round 144.2 to a whole number.
So,by rounding,we are getting the mass number of neodymium(Nd).The mass number of neodymium(Nd) (we are getting) is 144.
Step-3:
By the difference between mass number and atomic
number of neodymium(Nd),we get the number of neutrons in neodymium(Nd).
●Number of neutrons=144-60=84
In another way,
●Mass number=Protons +Neutrons
Or,144 =60+Neutrons
Or,144-60=Neutrons
Therefore,
Neutrons=84
Therefore, the number of neutrons in neodymium(Nd) is 84 here for this isotope.Remember that neutrons are present in the nucleous of neodymium(Nd) and it's charge is zero.
●Number of protons in neodymium(Nd) is 60.Protons are present in the nucleus of neodymium(Nd) .
● Number of electrons in neodymium(Nd) is 60.Remember that number of electron equals to proton in a neutral atom.Eletrons are present outside of nucleus of neodymium(Nd) .
