  Step-1:Cl2 Valence Electrons



To draw the Cl2 Lewis  structure , we have to find out the valence electrons of chlorine first.We express valence electrons as dots in Lewis dot structure.



To get the valence electrons of chlorine,we need to look at the electronic configuration of chlorine.

The highest value of principal quantum number here is n=3.


The highest value of principal quantum number ,n , indicates the valence shell and we know the electrons in valence shell is called valence shell.












The nunber of valence electrons in chlorine atom is 7.So, the number of Cl2 valence electrons is 14.

Cl2 ---->7 × 2 = 14

These 14 valence electrons have two tasks at the same time.They will connect the two atoms and satisfy the octet for the two chlorine atoms.

Now satisfy the octet of a chlorine atom.

Out of 6 valence electrons,we have used six.So,the remaining valence electrons are zero.

Now  look,both chlorine atoms have satisfied the octet rule.

Formal charge =Valence electrons - Unshared Electrons - 1/2(Shared Electrons)

•Shared electrons of Cl= 2

•Unshared electrons of Cl = 6
