when an atom loses an electron it becomes quizlet

◆Choose the answer.

A) Negative ion

B) Positive ion

C) Neutral

D)Nothing

Answer:

When an atom loses an electron,it becomes positive ion which is called cation.

You know that the charge of proton  is positive (+1) and the charge of electron is negative (+1).

Besides,we know that an atom is neutral because the number of proton and electron is in same number.

Now if one electron goes from the neutral atom, one proton of that atom will not be satisfied. Thus the neutral atom become positively charged.

H(1)=one proton and one electron=Neutral atom

H+(1)=one proton and zero electron=Positively charged hydrogen atom=Cation

So the charge of atom will be positive (+1) if it loses an electron and this positively charged ion is called cation.
