Is H2SO4(Sulphuric acid) an Acid or Base?
Today we will know about whether H2SO4(Sulfuric acid) is an acid or Base in just four steps.
Step-1:
H₂SO₄ gives hydrogen ion into water ,H₂O.We know that an acid gives hydrogen ion in water.So H₂SO₄ is an acid.H₂SO₄ is an acid according to Arrhenius concept of acid and base.
H₂SO₄ ----> SO₄²- + H+
Step-2:
H₂SO₄ reacts with an base to produce salt and water.So H₂SO₄ is an acid.
H₂SO₄ +NaOH ----> Na₂SO₄ + H₂O
H₂SO₄ =Acid
NaOH =Base
Na₂SO₄=sodium sulphate
H₂O =Water
Step-3:
H₂SO₄ gives proton(H+) to a base NH₃.Since H₂SO₄ is a proton donar , H₂SO₄ is an acid.According to Brønsted–Lowry concept of acid and base, also called proton theory of acids and bases, H₂SO₄ is an acid.
H₂SO₄ +NH₃ ----> (NH₄)₂SO₄ + H₂O
Step-4:
H₂SO₄ turns blue litmus paper into red.We know that an acid can do that.So,H₂SO₄ is an acid.
